15 Minute Project ... Pretties in Less Than 1/4 of an Hour

This colorful birthday card was created in less than 15 Minutes using ribbon scraps!

I created this 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" top-folded card for my cousin Ted's birthday and, since Ted's a he, I didn't want to use 'pretty' stuph, or flowers, or pastels. I always find masculine-style cards to be challenging but this one really went together easily. Ted, as much as I'd appreciate it, I really hope you haven't taken up reading my blog ... especially since this card is your gift, too!

If you click on the image, you'll be able to see how the use of two Bazzill chipboard squares covered with ribbon scraps really adds impact and dimension to this very simple design.

Here's how it was done: using regular transparent tape, I adhered the ribbon scraps to the chipboard. Next, I glued the square down on a piece of Kraft card stock. Once the glue had dried, all of a minute or two, I trimmed the Kraft square flush to the chipboard. I took the time to do this extra step to prevent the card base from warping and 'bubbling' from the wet glue. That always looks so yucky on the inside of a card ... take my word for it, lol!

I used a rich, brown texturized card stock for my base. Using the Kraft card stock, I cut a ribbon slide using the Cuttlebug and threaded through a piece of matching ribbon.

The sentiment was stamped on the slide with brown ink, and the whole ribbon/slide assembly was adhered to the front of the card using double-sided adhesive.

Finally, using a shader brush, I brushed the ribbons with a light coat of Modge Podge in a matte finish. Doing so will help keep the ribbon tightly adhered to the chipboard and also prevent the ribbon from curling, gathering dust, yellowing, fading, and generally lookin' crummy.

It's fun and economical to use your ribbon scraps in a project like this!

Ingredients:

  • Textured Card Stock: Bazzill Basic
  • Kraft Card Stock: Bazzill
  • Stamps: 'Faux Ribbon' Collection (Papertrey Ink)
  • Ink: Palette Hybrid, 'Burnt Umber' (Stewart Superior)

  • Tools: Cuttlebug Machine (Provo Craft); Slide Die Set (Provo Craft); Scor-It Board (Hammond); Shader Brush (Loew-Cornell)

Thanks so much for sharing part of your busy day with me ... have a 'Super' weekend!

What a wonderful use for ribbon -- I'll have to remember this -- it makes such a great guy card -- we still get to use our beloved ribbon, but it's not the least bit frilly or girly -- WONDERFUL IDEA!!!
